WordDebt
Paying off our cultural debt to Greece with HealRWorld and Hamogelo.
Using public Twitter and Facebook data, we converted social media posts into potential donations toward solving the Greek education crisis. Users were charged a few cents for every word derived from Greek detected by our algorithm, helping us all pay off our cultural and linguistic debt to Greece.

The Greek education system was on the brink of a tragedy. At the heart of its economic and refugee crisis, Greece had reduced its education budget by 45%.
Over 1,000 schools had been closed since 2011. Teachers lost their jobs, and students lost their futures.
-
The birthplace of democracy was once the cultural centre of the Western world, and many of the words in our languages still find their roots in Greek. In some ways, we all owe Greece a cultural debt.
-
Every time someone used a word derived from Greek on Twitter and Facebook, we gave them the opportunity to donate a few cents towards Greek education and pay off our cultural debt, one word at a time.
